Having researched semaglutide for some time now, used it with a select group of my patients, and utilized it myself, I am excited to announce that we are now offering compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide at RestorMedicine for our US-based patients.
Semaglutide and GLP-1 receptor agonists have gained significant attention for their benefits in the management of certain conditions, particularly type 2 diabetes, weight management, and, more recently, their potential effects on joint pain and inflammation.
I have been prescribing semaglutide, and its cousin tirzepatide, to my patients for several months now, and seeing dramatic benefits. Not only are people gaining better blood sugar regulation and losing weight, but their overall inflammation levels are reducing.
One patient of mine who has been in and out of Lyme/mold treatment for some years told me that she’s been taking GLP-1 agonists for 12 months and her body aches and pains have totally resolved. This is likely due to two factors – the reduction of stress on her joints with a 40 pound weight loss, and the effect of semaglutide itself in breaking the inflammatory cycle. She feels and looks great!
What are GLP-1 Agonists?
Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, such as semaglutide, mimic the action of the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1, which plays a critical role in regulating blood sugar levels. These medications are prescribed for people with type 2 diabetes and have also demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in promoting weight loss in non-diabetic patients.
Semaglutide has a number of benefits in the body
- Improved blood sugar control by enhancing insulin secretion and inhibiting glucagon release.
- Weight loss by slowing gastric emptying and promoting feelings of fullness and satiety.
- Cardiovascular benefits – reducing the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
- Reduced risk of hypoglycemia – GLP-1 agonists only stimulate insulin release when blood glucose are elevated keeping blood sugar levels more stable.
- Effects on joint pain and overall inflammation – both direct effects of the medication itself and by reducing weight which can put strain on the musculoskeletal system.
- Potential for long-term use – studies indicate that semaglutide and tirzepatide are effective over extended periods, suggesting that it can be part of a long-term treatment strategy for many individuals.
Dr. Nicola shares how she is using semaglutide with her chronic Lyme patients:
Dr. Nicola answers some of the most commonly asked questions about semaglutide:
Compounded semaglutide has advantages over brand names such as Wegovy and Ozempic –
- Cost is $300-400/month depending on dose, not upwards of $1000/month as with the brand names.
- Consistent and reliable supply.
- Leaving the brand name medications to be available to diabetes patients and not interfering with their supply.
- Ability to titrate up dose gradually to minimize any side effects.
- Flexibility to microdose for maintenance.
Side Effects
As with all medications, semaglutide/tirzepatide can have some side effects. The most common is GI upset including nausea, stomach ache, constipation or diarrhea. Less common side effects include dizziness and fatigue.
In my patients so far, there have been minimal side effects. I have found ways to minimize side effects including titrating the dose up gradually, and incorporating a GLP-1 probiotic to both reduce GI side effects and boost the effects of the semaglutide. I believe these strategies make all the difference. I also coach my patients in the key factors with their diet and exercise to optimize the effects of semaglutide.
GLP-1 agonists are not a quick fix for someone who is eating poorly and not taking care of themselves. But I have many patients, including those suffering with chronic, complex conditions, that are eating extremely well, exercising to their capacity, and still have weight gain and inability to lose weight. GLP-1 agonists can be an excellent option for these folks.
In summary, semaglutide and other GLP-1 agonists offer a powerful combination of blood sugar control, weight management, cardiovascular protection, and potentially reduced joint pain and inflammation.
