Craniosacral therapy is a gentle form of bodywork originating from osteopathy that uses light touch to assess for restrictions of movement within the body. The production and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid around the brain and spinal cord creates a regular rhythmic movement of the cranium, sacrum and spine called the craniosacral rhythm. The craniosacral rhythm can be felt throughout the body since movement within the central column gets transmitted through bones, joints, muscles, fascia, and even organs.
How does Craniosacral therapy work?
When dysfunction is detected, the therapist indirectly follows the body’s own movement until there is a release and restoration of regular rhythm. During a release it is common to experience twitching, heat, pulsations, deep breaths/sighs, sensations of lengthening, floating, or stretching. It’s also common to feel nothing at all. Tissue memory can result in surfacing of strong emotions or memories during a release. Although craniosacral therapy works on structural restrictions, it acts as a bridge between the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual realms. It joins physical science with consciousness and has a profound effect on healing the whole person.
What should I expect during a session?
Craniosacral therapy sessions are 50 minutes in length and done fully clothed, lying on a massage table. Overall, you can expect to feel incredibly relaxed. Craniosacral therapy is restorative to the nervous system and some patients even fall asleep!
How many sessions does it take to see results?
Each person and response is unique. Some patients experience relief immediately after a session, while others notice gradual progress over several sessions. Craniosacral therapy continues to integrate change in your body even after the session is over. You may notice physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual shifts for up to 1-2 weeks following the session. It’s recommended to start with 3 initial sessions spaced 1-2 weeks apart.
